Who Is The Best Coach In Texas Right Now
The top basketball coach in the state of Texas is one of its oldest. At the age of 74, Leta Andrews is still coaching Grandbury-s Lady Pirates. She has 1,333 victories under her belt and is still hungry for more. In fact, Leta has won more basketball games than any other coach in the United States, male or female. Her teams are always feared. She has created this atmosphere over five decades of coaching. She demands fairness of her players and the officials who referee her games. Her teams are always known for being fundamentally sound. The girls who play for her have a great respect for her. Under her coaching ability they also gain an even greater respect for the game of basketball. Her teams have gone to the Texas final four 16 times. Leta Andrews has a tough love approach to coaching, but the girls know that she deeply loves them. They often confide in her with their high school worries. Ms. Anderson instills in her girls a work ethic that will serve them well for the rest of their lives.
Leta Anderson has also received a lifetime of coaching honors. In 2010 she was inducted into the National High School Basketball Hall of Fame. Probably many coaches who have to face her Lady Pirates hoped that she would then stop coaching. Leta took it as encouragement to coach even harder. She is also a member of the Texas High School Basketball Hall of Fame and the Texas Sports Hall of Fame. In 1993, she was named the Outstanding Coach/Teacher of the Year by the Walt Disney Company. She is also the first recipient of the Morgan Wootten Award honoring lifetime achievement in coaching high school basketball.
She has coached for over fifty years. Many young people have come through her program and leave better people for having been coached by Leta Andrews.
