Last year, Texas A&M women-s basketball won their first ever National Championship in a titillating 76-70 win over Notre Dame. Coach Gary Blair, after having left Arkansas in 2003 for Texas A&M, has built the women-s program into a nationally recognized power, taking the Aggie women to six straight NCAA tournaments. This past spring was the team-s first 30-win season and first trip to the Final Four. The question remains, can the defending national champions do it again this year, after what was truly a magnificent season, and facing yet another challenging schedule for the upcoming 2011-2012 season. The whole story can be found at http://news.blogs.cnn.com/2011/08/31/texas-am-aggies-on-their-way-out-of-big-12-but-to-where/ The Big 12 Conference schedule will begin on January 4 vs. Kansas State on the road. The new schedule features a double round-robin format, where conference members play each other twice. In addition to conference play, Aggie women will face 18 opponents who advanced to postseason play last year, including 13 teams that reached the NCAA Tournament. Among the teams the women will face in non-conference play is the seven-time national champion Connecticut. This season the Aggies will rely on sophomore Kelsey Bone, newcomers Rachel Mitchell, Tori Scott and Alexia Standish, and three returning starters: Sydney Carter, Adaora Elonu and Tyra White. The 2012 Big 12 Women’s Basketball Championship will be held March 7-10 in Kansas City’s Municipal Auditorium. Texas A&M will host the first and second rounds of the NCAA Championship March 17 and 19 at Reed Arena.

The Texas A&M women’s basketball team currently stands atop the NCAA women’s basketball mountain. Their incredible victory in last year’s championship game catapulted them into stardom, as this was the first championship in the program’s history.

Now that they are on the top of the mountain, they have targets to size of Texas on their backs. Maintaining their status as a top program in women’s college basketball will be even tougher than obtaining it in the first place was. When you’re the champion, everyone is gunning for you, bringing their best game to the court. The Texas A&M women will have to be prepared to face the other teams’ best efforts each and every game they play this upcoming season.

As Ric Flair so eloquently says, “To be the man, you gotta beat the man.” Gender differences aside, this quote directly applies to the luxury enjoyed by the Texas A&M women’s team this year. However, the luxury is always a double-edged sword. Other teams want to “be the man” and they’ll play their best to accomplish it. The Texas A&M women will have to play with the same hunger and drive they played with on their way to the National Championship if they want to win it again. The information doesn-t stop now.

Though many people have different opinions as to who the best player in Texas this year is, a majority of them will say that Dirk Nowitzki. The seven foot German is not only a threat from beyond the arc, but now has a championship ring to back it up. Some Texas fans will also say Tim Duncan or Yao Ming, but the truth is, Dirk possesses skills that nor Tim or Yao have.

Before Dirk won the NBA championship last year, he was already dubbed as one of the best international players to ever enter the league. Now that he has proven himself on the biggest stage in basketball, can he be considered as one of the best ever?

Before you make arguments for Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, and Larry Bird, Dirk is definitely one of the best big men to ever play the game. With the shooting touch that reminds us all too well of Larry Bird and a fade away jumper that would even impress Jordan, Dirk will easily go down as one of the top ten players of all time. If it wasn’t for his few playoff blunders in the past, Dirk would have at least three rings by now. Will there be more to come? We’ll just have to wait and see.

Here-s a short list of our favorites ” maybe they-ll even help you win a trivia round somewhere
The Longhorn-s first season on the courts was all the way back in 1906.
Abe Lemmons, arguably Texas- most colorful and revered coach was known to smoke cigars during games and right on the court.
When Tom Penders took over the team in the late 1980s he came from, you guessed it, the University of Rhode Island.
The Longhorns have a record of .811 in the Frank Erwin Center since it opened and they began playing there back in 1977.
Texas has only retired 3 numbers in the history of its program: Kevin Durant, T.J. Ford and Slater Martin.
Texas has one 3 Big 12 championships in their history as a NCAA team.
There you go ” all the Texas facts you never knew you needed! They should tide you over until the season starts, right?

It’s going to difficult for the Texas Longhorns to win it all in basketball.

Winning the Big 12 is one thing and a nice goal to achieve, but the fact of the matter is that programs like Texas are looking for the NCAA Tournament and going deep into the tournament.

That’s a difficult run to make and it will be even harder when a couple of your best players are heading off the NBA. It has not been decided yet.

But forward Tristan Thompson has decided to enter the NBA Draft. He was second on the team in scoring, averaging 13.3 points a game and led the team in rebounding, averaging 7.8 per game.

Add to that is Thompson’s friend, starting point guard Cory Joseph.

Both players went to Findlay Prep prior to joining Texas and are going to the NBA together.

If they lose those two players, the Longhorns will be starting out the season at a disadvantage.

Their leading scoring Jordon Hamilton, who averaged 18.6 points per game, is also heading to the NBA Draft.

With their best players gone, it will be difficult for the Longhorns to reload enough to win the NCAA title.

The Longhorns are a program that reloads, not rebuilds each season. But having enough firepower to win the NCAA title may be a bit much to expect from this group.

Losing their best players, it will take time to which players coming in can fill the void.

The Spurs were originally a team from the American Basketball Association and are on of the four teams from that league to remain intact after the merger with the National Basketball Association that took place in 1976. They are the only former American Basketball Association team to win an NBA championship, and outside of the Los Angeles Lakers, Boston Celtics and Chicago Bulls, have the most championships of any NBA team with four.

In their 33 years of NBA play the Spurs have won 17 division titles and have made the playoffs 19 out of the last 20 NBA seasons. The Spurs have not missed the playoffs since Tim Duncan joined the team in 1997. Since Tim Duncan joined the Spurs, they have won 4 NBA titles and were what some considered one of the premier sports teams of the 2000′s.

Many people don’t know that the San Antonio spurs started out in the ABA as the Dallas Chaparrals in 1967 before moving to San Antonio and becoming the Spurs in 1973. The Spurs would later be the team that NBA legend George Gervin would end up playing for, but it wasn’t until the Tim Duncan era that the team would start collecting NBA championships.

The Houston Rockets were established as the San Diego Rockets in 1967. After four years of low attendance, and bad on court performance, the Rockets packed up and left for greener pastures, so to say, in Houston, Texas. From the moment they touched down in Houston, the Rockets started playing better basketball. The team reached won their first Division Title in 1977, the same year that they reached their first the Eastern Conference Finals. Four seasons later, in 1981, the Rockets reached their first NBA Finals, losing to the Boston Celtics in six games. The franchise made possibly their biggest move in 1984 drafting future Hall of Famer Hakeem Olajuwon with the number one pick. Olajuwon would lead the Rockets to their second NBA Finals appearance in 1986, once again losing to the Celtics in six games. The rockets would consistently reach the playoffs over the next couple of years, though it would not be until they hired Rudy Tomjanovich as coach in 1992 that they would become a truly elite team. The Rockets would win two consecutive titles, in 1994 and 1995, as of 2011 the only titles the franchise has ever won. Despite players like Yao Ming, the Rockets have not been back to the Finals since.
