Examining Baylor Basketball 8 Years Later
The summer of 2003 will be a summer Baylor basketball fans will not soon forget. Coming of a 14-14 season and looking to improve for the next season a series of events would have Baylor Basketball displayed prominently in the national news. Starting off with a murder investigation and then later a rules violation investigation the world of Baylor mens basketball was knocked to it’s knees.
The investigation into the disappearance of team member Carlton Dotson quickly turned into a murder investigation of fellow teammate Patrick Dennehy. As the murder investigation was taking place, information about rules violations by the coaching staff emerged. The rules violations investigation would end with the firing of the coaches and almost lethal penalties to the basketball program. At this point the program was hanging on by a thread as they were missing the 2 players involved in the murder and 4 others who decided to transfer.
Enter new coach Scott Drew. Faced with the daunting task of rebuilding a team without out the top players, and limited in the number of scholarships the university to offer, Coach Drew dug in. Building on pride and integrity the road was rough at first. The next three years saw the team win a total of 21 games. Coach Drew was putting his team together and continued working them hard.
A 15-16 record overall in 2006/2007 was followed by a 21 win season in 2007/2008 and topped the next year with 24 wins. The hard work was paying off. Coach Drew was bringing an almost dead program to a very respectable program.
In 2009/2010 the basketball team busted through to a 28-8 season which saw them make it all the way to the elite 8 before falling to eventual champion Duke. Baylor basketball is back and better than before.
